Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor

power_systems_croppedAs part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, NC State University seeks new faculty members to provide key leadership in sustainable energy systems and policy (SESP). We seek innovative and transformative academic leaders whose scholarship will advance NC State’s position as one of the premier universities of its kind. These hires will build on nationally prominent, campus-wide strengths in energy technology development, economics, policy analysis, and energy-related extension and outreach. One of the four faculty hires in the SESP cluster is focused on energy systems engineering.

About the Cluster

The vision for the SESP cluster is to transform NC State into a preeminent and high visibility hub for interdisciplinary research that informs key energy decisions at the state, federal, and international levels. NC State recognizes that growing global energy demands must be met while simultaneously addressing the impacts of energy development. The overarching SESP goal is to pursue rigorous, problem-driven energy research that considers the relevant technical, economic, environmental, political, and social dimensions in order to deliver practical solutions.

The positions in this cluster offer dynamic, forward-thinking faculty a unique opportunity to integrate with, and expand upon, NC State’s considerable expertise in order to develop world-class research and academic initiatives around the broad theme of sustainable energy. Cluster faculty must have an ability and willingness to work collaboratively, and priority will be given to candidates that have demonstrated interdisciplinary collaborations. Two new faculty with expertise in energy economics and policy have already joined the SESP cluster. Desired SESP capabilities for the two remaining positions include, but are not limited to, developing and applying mathematical models of energy systems; modeling economy, technology, and policy interactions in evolving smart grids and electricity markets under uncertainty; evaluating the environmental impacts of energy technology using life cycle assessment, and performing systems-level analysis that considers interactions between energy and other infrastructure systems. About the Position

In order to link ongoing technical work with broader economic, policy, and environmental considerations, we seek an expert in energy systems engineering with in-depth knowledge in at least one of the following areas: electric power, transportation, or renewable energy. The electric power and transportation sectors are increasingly enhanced with power electronics, energy storage, and distributed control algorithms, particularly as distributed generation becomes prevalent with the increased penetration of renewable energy and the growing interdependence between the electric power and transportation systems. Desired abilities include the use of advanced mathematical methods to model physical systems and to develop techniques for system optimization and control. This new faculty member is expected to engage in one or more of the following research and education activities: develop methods and algorithms for simulating large-scale dynamic systems; model economic, policy and technical interactions in dynamic systems under uncertainties applied to electricity markets; develop and analyze market designs and rate structures in the smart grid environment and market based operations; design electricity markets with strong interactions between energy providers, system operators, and customers; design monitoring as well as control and pricing algorithms for electric power systems with distributed generation; analyze critical infrastructures related to energy and evaluate interdependencies; develop controls and methods for normal and emergency control of electric power systems

Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in a field relevant to the SESP theme. Positions are open to any rank at the time of appointment. Applicants at the senior level should have demonstrated excellence in research and a sustained record of collaborative work. All candidates, regardless of rank, should have a strong capacity to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the capacity to mentor doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows.
